I’m about to graduate. What’s next?

Written by Nuskha Semaun on 18 May 2021 for Graduates

Have you recently graduated or about to and have absolutely no idea what you want to do? Lucky you! You may not realize it but you’re entering the greatest five years of your life (don’t worry, the years after that aren’t so bad either). You’re free to follow your calling, make a dent in the universe, and attack whatever it is you want to do. So, if you’re feeling a bit lost about which direction to head in, here are some top tips for starting the next chapter of your life and getting the life you want to!

Graduation

Find your first job

It’s natural to feel a little uneasy about leaving the ‘bubble’ of university life and making your first step into the real world. The start of your career is the beginning of a life-long journey and it can be pretty overwhelming. How do you make the right choice when it comes to your employer? Which position is the best fit based on your hard and soft skills? It’s quite alright not knowing what it is exactly you want to do, or what you’re especially good at. We can all use some guidance once in a while. Luckily, we’re writing an entire e-book on this topic. So, make sure to follow us on all social media (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn & Twitter), that way you’ll be one of the first to know as soon as it’s released!

We’ll release this e-book soon, so make sure to follow us on all social media to get an update as soon as it’s out!

Pro tip: Don’t forget about company culture. A job should never be just a job. Before you accept a position, ensure there is a good fit between the company’s culture and your personality. This will definitely help you reach your future goals.

Take a gap year

Your early twenties are the best time in your life to take huge risks. If you’ve always dreamed of seeing the world, now is the time to travel and learn! Traveling improves your employability and helps you build valuable real-life skills such as self-sufficiency, organizational skills and social skills that employers value.

A gap year can be anything you want it to be. Maybe you want to fund your travels with remote and digital work that builds your CV and makes you a more interesting job candidate when you return. Whatever it is, go for it! You’ll never have another opportunity like this. Just make sure that you have a post-gap-year plan in place before you leave! By the way, we are aware that this is probably a more popular option when we aren’t faced with a global pandemic.

Continue your studies

Now, there are plenty of reasons not to go to grad school; it definitely isn’t a smart option if you’re just stalling for time or postponing career decisions. But if you do your research and know what you want to specialize in, a postgraduate degree could be worth looking into. Getting onto the right course will help you gain experience in your chosen specialism while boosting your employability. This is the best time in your life to upskill and hone in on what you want from your career. So, go for it!

Don’t forget that a post-grad study can be a big investment, but if you get onto a good course you should be well-positioned to land a well-paid job as soon as you graduate.
